“We’re shedding the stigma that we need men for power and money and the idea that we were only meant to be a wife.”

Empowering words from How to Be Single actress Alison Brie, who was speaking at the London Premiere of the new rom-com on Tuesday night. Braving the elements to attend the elegant, if slightly damp, event in Leicester Square, Alison, who plays unmarried Lucy in the flick, explained how the film is more than just another rom-com, that How to Be Single strives to break old-fashioned societal views and expectations of women, saying “now that women can have children later and women are focusing on their careers longer, you can really be single and it isn’t a negative thing” and learning to enjoy single life, reveling in the freedom of it, is what How to Be Single is all about.

Rebel Wilson, Dakota Johnson, and Leslie Mann, the other three leading ladies, were also present, umbrellas at the ready. Mann also spoke about how the film portrays strong female characters, something which she said is lacking in the film world. Rebel Wilson agreed, saying that she loves how her own career has seen her take part in films with powerful female presences, such as Bridesmaids and Pitch Perfect, adding “I love the girl power”.

Dakota Johnson, who stars as Alice, revealed how much fun she had on set, particularly with Rebel, who she said was “amazing to work with, she’s smart and funny and her brain never stops working”. How to Be Single hits theatres in time for Valentines Day, to show all the single ladies out that if you’re not having fun being single, then you’re not doing it right!
