Pixar seem intent on turning full theatres of people to blubbering messes this year, first with Inside Out in the summer and now with the beautiful The Good Dinosaur. An emotive story all about the power of love and the importance of family, this latest offering asks the question what if the asteroid that forever altered life on Earth had missed, allowing the Jurassic era to continue. Well, apparently one very cute Apatosaurus called Arlo (Raymond Ochoa) would have popped up with little arms but big attitude to make his mark in the world.
Following Arlo, the tiny but tough dino who after being separated from his family, battles against the odds to make his way home, Steve Martino’s adventure story teaches that you have to look through your fear to see the beauty on the other side. Arlo and his adorably feisty companion, a feral boy who he names Spot, capture our hearts as they embark on a spiritual journey, discovering that if you aint got fear you aint alive.
The Good Dinosaur reflects a lot of other Disney/Pixar films in a number of ways, such as The Lion King and Finding Nemo. Firstly and most obviously, all of these focus on anthropomorphised worlds, which of course boost their cute charm instantaneously; secondly, all three revolve around father-son relationships; and thirdly, each one centres on families who have been all but torn asunder by tragedy and yet still manage to survive and thrive as a loving unit. The fact that these story elements are time and again repeated and do not detract from the success of these movies is a testament to the animation studios flair for crafting touching tales that speak to audiences on an emotional level , keeping them coming back for more time and again.
Bringing this captivating coming-of-age story to life on the screen is the stunning photorealistic imagery and dazzling CG backdrops. Brimming with the characteristic blend of heart and comedy that the animation studio is beloved for, The Good Dinosaur is sure to touch hearts and tickle ribs as it illustrates how a single moment can change everything.
